Protect Your Back While Shoveling Snow This Winter

back pain ann arbor
Whether we like it or not, winter in Michigan is here! With winter comes snow, and with snow comes the risk of hurting ourselves when we shovel.

Have you thrown out your back before? The pain can be intense, and even worse if you’re someone who suffers with chronic low back pain.

How can you prevent back pain and keep from throwing out your back?

Throwing out your back sounds sudden and violent, but it might not involve sharp pain or even a realization that you’ve done it until later. Symptoms of a thrown out back include:

  • Back stiffness that limits your range of motion
  • Intense low back pain
  • Muscle spasms
  • Problems standing up straight or maintaining good posture

Shoveling snow is one of the biggest reasons people in the Midwest throw out their back each year.

How Can a Chiropractor Relieve Lower Back Pain from Exercising?

Did you know a trainer or weightlifting coach and specific correction chiropractic can work together to help you get the best results from your workouts? Personal trainers and weightlifting coaches want to make sure your muscles engage with the correct order and timing while performing a movement.

When you feel better, you work out better, and you’ll be able to stick to your workout schedule without taking long breaks to relieve an injury.

If you have injured your lower back, neck or any other part of your body in the gym, you have options when it comes to treatment. Everything from over-the-counter medications, massage, foam rolling, and stretching. The list goes on and on. But why would you want to see a chiropractor, especially a specific correction chiropractor?

Most people think that strength training will only aggravate injuries, but did you know strength training exercises are a great way to stay fit generally, but also improve mobility, confidence and overall health, including lower back pain?

When done properly, strength exercises do exactly that – strengthen weak muscles in your legs, core, and back, which will give you more support over time and help reduce back pain.

Is Working Out Causing Your Lower Back Pain?

Do you suffer from frequent lower back pain?

Do you notice pain more after you’ve just finished a tough workout? Are you worried that the exercises themselves or poor form while working out are contributing to your lower back pain?

Many nerves run through your spine, so lower back pain can actually lead to leg pain, hip problems, and overall decreased mobility. Protecting your lower back while working out can prevent direct injury, and control progression of a problem that may have already occurred.

Decrease your risk of a lower back injury by:

  1. Strengthening your core muscles: A strong and supported core helps to support your spine! While working out, you’ve probably realized that all core exercises rely on your back in some way. Keep your spine protected by keeping your lower back flush to the floor, or during sit-ups and crunches, make sure you’re not arching your back.

4 Stretches to Provide Pain Relief While Working at Home

If you’ve been working from home, think about how much movement you’re getting throughout the day. You wake up, walk from your bedroom to the kitchen, poor a cup of coffee, then head to your home office to begin the day. Lunchtime rolls around when you grab a bite to eat, then back to work. When the day finally ends, you probably go sit at the kitchen table, eat dinner, relax on the couch to unwind, and then off to bed … only to wake up the next day and do it all over again. This is a typical day for millions of Americans right now.

What’s the answer?

You have to get your body moving and out of the house! Take 30-45 minutes to work out in the morning or afternoon. This could be a walk or run around the neighborhood, or a series of body weight exercises. If you’re lucky enough to have a home gym, go ahead and pump some iron. Mobility is also important! Spend 2-3 minutes every hour stretching. That might seem like a lot, but its only 2-3 minutes, and in reality, if you mute yourself on those conference calls, so you can multitask.

Spending 2-3 minutes every hour to do some general maintenance on your body will help counteract a lot of the physical stress and achiness you experience while working from home.

Getting Relief from Back Pain while Working from Home

Many folks have been working from home over the past month and a half, and many of our favorite businesses have shut down. Gyms, restaurants, movie theaters, schools, and daycares are the places we frequent the most.

Since we’re encouraged to leave our homes only for groceries and essential health services, most of us have been pretty sedentary.

Research shows that a sedentary lifestyle leads to a myriad of health problems. According to the World Health organization, a sedentary lifestyle leads to an increase in all causes of mortality. It also leads to double the risk for cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and obesity.

In addition to chronic conditions, being sedentary contributes to a number of musculoskeletal conditions including shoulder, hip, neck, mid-back and low back pain. It’s estimated that up to 80% of people experience low back pain at least once in their lifetime. Along with pain comes the psychological effects, like depression, grief, and discomfort. It’s easy to see that sitting around all day, even if you’re working, is not good for your health. How can you get back pain relief?
